The Eastside Handweaver's Guild was awarded a sponsorship grant by the Michigan League of Handweavers to throw a community dye party in Detroit, on August 9. We wanted to meet and make friends with members of Fiber Club* and BIPOC Fiber Club, and chose to have a dye party because dying is approachable and relevant to artists across disciplines. We offered an indigo vat, a selection of reactive dye powders for guests to mix themselves, and had a stock of silk scarf blanks on hand for anyone who needed something to dye. We had a good turnout, with many guests being college age or recent graduates. Thanks to the sponsorship of MLH, we were able to host this as a free event.

Thom Koster will present a program on Temari Balls
7:00 PM EST
Temari, or "hand ball" in Japanese, is a Japanese folk art and handicraft made by embroidery on a thread ball. Originally made for children hand ball games they have been elevated over the centuries to become works of art. Since this embroidery is on a sphere there are interesting things that can be done with very limited embroidery knowledge.
In this talk Thom will cover what brought him to this craft, the history behind it and some of the traditional elements you will see in some different designs of temari.
